In Nova Scotia, you are never more than an hour’s drive from the sea. The province juts out from Canada into the Atlantic Ocean. Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s three Maritime (close to the sea) Provinces, along with New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

THE SEA IS NEVER FAR AWAY

Nova Scotia consists of a peninsula connected to the Canadian mainland, Cape Breton Island, and a number of smaller islands. It’s Canada’s second smallest province. Only Prince Edward Island is smaller.

The clock struck midnight. Fireworks lit up the sky. The treeless Canadian city of Iqaluit erupted with cheering! Was it New Year’s Eve? No, it was April 1, 1999. People were celebrating the birth of Nunavut, Canada’s newest territory.

Nunavut is Canada’s first territory run by native people. Its capital city is Iqaluit. The creation of Nunavut marked the first change to Canada’s map in 50 years.

A VAST LAND, FEW PEOPLE

Nunavut is located in Canada’s far north, in the Canadian Arctic. Much of it reaches into the Arctic Circle, the area around the North Pole. In fact, about 60 percent of Nunavut lies within the Arctic Circle.

Many of the biggest events for this national birthday party are held in the city of Ottawa, in the province of Ontario. That’s because Ottawa is Canada’s capital. If you’re there on Canada Day, you’ll see parades and spectacular fireworks displays

ImageDid you ever read the book Anne of Green Gables? It’s about the adventures and misadventures of an orphan named Anne Shirley. She lives on Prince Edward Island in the late 1800s. Her house, Green Gables, is in a village called Avonlea.

ANNE’S LAND

Anne of Green Gables was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The real Green Gables was owned by relatives of the author. Green Gables is actually in Cavendish, a small farming community in the northern part of Prince Edward Island. Some people call this part of the island “Anne’s Land.”
