Québec City

You might be surprised to learn that most of Canada has two official languages. One is English. The other is French. You may need to know French if you want to understand a menu or a street sign in the province of Québec. Unlike the rest of Canada, Québec has only one official language.

Colonists from France settled Québec, starting in the 1600s. Today, most of Québec’s people have French ancestry. The province is serious about preserving its French heritage. Its laws forbid other languages from being used on local business signs unless French words are also given.

ImageIn 1896, a gold strike in Canada’s Yukon Territory set off the Klondike gold rush. Thousands of prospectors rushed to the territory hoping to get rich by finding gold. The American writer Jack London was among them.

London didn’t get rich. After two years, he went home nearly broke. But he was loaded with story ideas! The Yukon Territory inspired two of London’s most famous novels: White Fang and The Call of the Wild.

Toronto Skyline

If you want a terrific view of the city of Toronto, go to the top of the CN Tower. It has the highest observation deck in the world, more than 1,460 feet (446 meters) from the ground. You’re up so high that you might think you’re in an airplane. The entire tower rises 1,815 feet (553 meters) from the ground.

Look up from almost anywhere in Toronto and you can see the CN Tower. CN stands for Canadian National Railways, the company that built the tower in the 1970s. Today, it’s Toronto’s most recognizable structure and a major tourist attraction. Radio and television signals are transmitted from it.

Icebergs in Antarctica

You are on the highest and windiest continent on Earth. It is also the coldest. Even in summer you need to wear a parka and thick gloves. Almost nothing lives here, although some penguins might waddle past on their way to the sea. You are on Antarctica.

AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD

Antarctica is a large ice-covered continent that surrounds the South Pole. The Southern (Antarctic) Ocean surrounds this frozen land.
