Anh Ngữ Sinh Động Bài 142

Ðây là Chương trình Anh Ngữ Sinh động New Dynamic English bài 142. Nathan Garcia of Smith Medical Supplies, Inc., comes to work late. Khi vào sở, anh nói với cô chủ sở là Helen McClure rằng, “My train broke down in Oakland.’’=xe điện ngầm tôi đi bị hư ở Oakland [một thị trấn đối diện với thành phố San Francisco.] I apologize for not calling, but my cell phone didn’t work in the tunnel.= Tôi xin lỗi vì đã không gọi điện thoại báo tin sẽ tới trễ vì máy điện thoại di động của tôi không nói được trong đường hầm. Tunnel.= đường hầm. Everything is under control.=mọi chuyện đều yên rồi. Come to work late=đến sở trễ. Break down=bị hư. My car broke down=xe hơi của tôi bị hư. I need a tow truck=tôi cần một xe câu. We were stuck in a tunnel for forty five minutes.=chúng tôi bị kẹt ở đường hầm trong 45 phút.

STUCK là quá khứ phân từ past participle của động từ bất qui tắc to stick, nguyên nghĩa là dính vào, như trong câu “Stick a stamp on the envelope”=dán tem lên bì thơ. To stick to the subject, nghĩa là đừng nói ra ngoài đề tài. To stick to the rules= theo đúng luật. Don’t go away, please stick around.= đừng đi, hãy nán lại. Hardly=rarely, scarcely, not quite, not at all=hiếm khi. You’re hardly ever late=Ít khi anh tới trễ. Harry is with Ms. Daniels explaining your proposal.=Anh Harry đang cùng cô Daniels giải thích về đề nghị của anh. You can take over as soon as you are ready.=lúc nào anh sẵn sàng thì anh tiếp tục [trình bày đề nghị của anh.] Take over=tiếp nhận công việc người khác đang làm. Everything is under control=mọi chuyện được giải quyết tốt đẹp, mọi chuyện yên rồi. [Trái nghĩa với “under control” là ‘‘out of control,” trục trặc.] It’ll take me just a couple of minutes.=tôi chỉ mất vài phút là sẵn sàng.

Vietnamese Explanation

Gary Engleton will be talking about how to apologize and how to respond to an apology. Sau khi Nathan xin lỗi ‘‘I’m really sorry that I’m so late,” anh cho biết lý do tại sao. Anh nói, “My train broke down in Oakland.” Anh nói: “I apologize for not calling,” và anh cho biết lý do, “My cell phone didn’t work in the tunnel,’’ điện thoại di động của tôi không gọi được trong đường hầm. Helen trả lời sau khi Nathan xin lỗi: That’s OK. It’s not a problem. Nathan, it’s perfectly all right. Anh Nathan à, không sao đâu.

Phân biệt cách dùng to assure và to reassure. He does assure me that he’s going to meet with you as soon as he gets back=ông đoan chắc với tôi là ông ấy sẽ gặp ông ngay sau khi ông ấy trở về. To assure có nghĩa là bảo đảm, đoan chắc. I assure you that I will be there.=tôi bảo đảm với anh là tôi sẽ đến đó. Rest assured that we will help you.=xin bạn vững tin là chúng tôi sẽ giúp bạn. To reassure=làm ai yên lòng. Helen reassures Nathan that everything is under control. =Helen làm Nathan yên lòng là mọi việc đều yên cả. She felt reassured after the police told her that her children were safe.

Gary’s Tips: Apologizing

Larry: Gary’s Tips.

 Gary discusses apologies.

UPBEAT MUSIC

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today I’ll be talking about how to apologize and how to respond to an apology.

Today’s Business Dialog begins with Nathan apologizing, using the expression “I’m sorry.”

Notice that he explains the reason why he is late.

Nathan: Helen, I’m really sorry that I’m so late.

My train broke down in Oakland.

Helen: That’s OK. It’s not a problem.

Gary: When you apologize, it is always important to give a reason.

Nathan also apologizes for not calling Helen and he explains why he didn’t call.

This time he uses the expression “I apologize...”

Nathan: Umm…. I apologize for not calling.

But my cell phone didn’t work in the tunnel.

Helen: Nathan, it’s perfectly all right.

 You’re hardly ever late.

Gary: In both of these cases, Helen accepts Nathan’s apology and tries to make him feel better.

She uses the expressions “That’s OK,” and “It’s perfectly all right” to reassure Nathan.

Vietnamese Explanation

To be upset=bực mình. In contrast=ngược lại, trái lại. Mr. Chapman asked me to apologize to you.= ông Chapman yêu cầu tôi xin lỗi ông. He was called out of town on a personal matter very suddenly. Ông ta có chuyện riêng đột ngột phải đi khỏi tỉnh. And he does assure me he is looking forward to meeting with you as soon as he gets back.=và ông ấy cam kết với tôi ông ấy mong gặp ông ngay khi ông trở về.

Ta nghe và tập nói một câu dài, In the meantime, I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products and so I’d like to work with you, if that would be all right. Ta tập nói câu dài này bằng cách lập lại từng nhóm chữ từ cuối lên đầu như sau: If that would be all right/I’d like to work with you/I’d like to work with you, if that would be all right. And your products/Internationall Robotics and your products/I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products/In the meantime, I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products.

Bây giờ lập lại cả câu dài như sau, In the meantime, I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products, and so I’d like to work with you, if that would be all right.

Cut 4

In contrast, Mr. Blake is upset that Mr. Chapman is not there to meet with him.

So when Mr. Gomez offers an apology, at first Mr. Blake only says “Uh huh.”

 Let’s listen.

Gomez: Uh, Mr. Chapman asked me to apologize to you.

He was called out of town on a personal matter very suddenly.

And he does assure me he is looking forward to meeting with you as soon as he gets back.

Blake: Uh huh.

Gary: This is not the most polite way to respond to this situation.

Mr. Blake shows that he is not happy with the situation.

But later Mr. Blake does accept the apology, saying “It’s no problem.”

Gomez: In the meantime, I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products...

...and so I’d like to work with you, if that would be all right.

Blake: Okay, sure. And I understand about Mr. Chapman’s absence.

 It’s no problem.

Gary: I hope today’s tips were helpful!

Eliz: Thanks, Gary!
