The Japanese generally marry in their mid- to late 20s, with men usually marrying slightly later than women. Weddings can be elaborate and expensive, and usually take place in hotels.

Marriage is discouraged until one’s education is complete. According to tradition, if a young man wishes to marry, he must first become well acquainted with the entire family of his intended wife and make himself agreeable to them. He then asks his parents to make his wishes known.

Marriages occur only with parental consent, and parents may arrange marriages for their children. The government has established minimum marriage ages (27 for men, 25 for women) to allow for the completion of military service and other obligations. Both parents usually work. Day care, usually at workplaces, is free.

Marriage is legal at age 16 but usually takes place when people are in their mid- to late 20s. Fewer people are getting married than in the past and those who do are marrying later. It has become increasingly popular in recent years for couples to live together before or instead of marriage.
English families are small (one or two children are the norm). Women are having fewer children and are waiting longer to have them. In the past three decades, a substantial number of women have begun working outside the home. The divorce rate has risen, as has the number of single-parent families.
